As a child, I always loved sitting with my grandmother and listening to her stories about her favorite items and historical figures displayed in her home. One that always stood out to me was her 24K gold plated Cleopatra figurine holding a hairbrush and a mirror with a gold snake wrapped around her arm. The figure was proudly displayed in her china cabinet for as long as I can remember. I learned that Cleopatra was not Egyptian, but Greek, like my grandmother. They were very much alike in so many ways, like their love for fighting the aging process and coming up with their health and beauty remedies. She told me Cleopatra was the one who invented eyeliner made from Kohl. This enhancement was not only for the beautiful look but for the health benefits. The eyeliner protected her eyes from the sun and worked as an antibiotic to keep bacteria from harming her eyes. The queen would gather berries and flower petals to create lip color and blush. Cleopatra maintained a strict beauty regimen to keep her fair complexion and youthful appearance. This regimen involved several treatments. One of these methods was bathing in warm milk and honey each day. It would help improve the tone of her skin and also keep it soft, just as a lactic acid chemical peel would.
As for the Snake- Cleopatra wore a gold cuff around her arm called an Ouroboros, a snake eating its tail. It sounds creepy, but the meaning is powerful. I chose this symbol to represent the never-ending cycle of age and skin shedding (cellular turnover), revealing the transformation and rebirth of our skin. The Ouroboros also represents healing, feminine power, Mother Earth, and the soul itself.
“ Age cannot wither her, nor custom stales her infinite variety.”
– Shakespeare on Cleopatra
